About Tantrum Niche Records

Officially Founded in 2002, Tantrum Niche Records is an independent company, specializing in the publishing, distribution, recording, production, and promotion of independent works of music.

TANTRUM (TAN-trum, n.)

  • An emotional outburst that is typically characterized by stubbornness, crying, screaming, defiance, angry ranting and a resistance to attempts at pacification. Physical control may be lost, the person may be unable to remain still, and even if the “goal” of the person is met he or she may not be calmed.

NICHE (NITCH, n.)

  • a position particularly well suited to the person who occupies it; “he found his niche in the academic world”
  • recess: a small concavity
  • recess: an enclosure that is set back or indented
  • (ecology) the status of an organism within its environment and community (affecting its survival as a species)

“A tantrum is something a child does to gain attention and forcibly exert some physical manifestation of emotion. This can be destructive, though a mature person’s exertion of that same passion through creative means of expression is constructive and often a relief to more than the one person having the tantrum. I just think of the word tantrum as a passionate exertion of emotion through either creative or destructive means. Niche, the way I pronounce it rhymes with itch, and it represents the smallest possible group that is also big enough to be considered big. There are a few of us working together to  create music for a larger group of individuals who enjoy and support what we do, but we do not aspire to please everyone or conform to mainstream trends.” – John Maxfield

Tantrum Niche Records is also a name by which the artists represented by the label do business as, for the sake of legitimizing themselves in the marketplace by identifying us as “their label,” though Tantrum Niche does not withhold any income from the artists it represents, allowing the musicians to earn much more money from selling their works, and from renting their time and services. Transaction fees are deducted from the total charged to the buyer’s credit card by PayPal, but this is usually less than $1 per transaction. Though we make our products available by traditional physical means for sale on websites and in stores that sell physical merchandise, we have digital versions of all of the albums on the label, downloadable for free from the front page of our website from any Internet-connected device. Musicians on the label encourage people to download and share their albums for free, and also to have their fans donate whatever they can to them directly, as often as they are able via PayPal. Fans can donate directly to musicians and/or to the label. Tantrum Niche Records does not incessantly email or text our supporters, or give personal and private information to any outside company or third party. If you make a purchase from or contribution to Tantrum Niche Records, we occasionally send out cards, letters, and other ‘care packages’ to fans with exclusives we believe they will enjoy.
